Rye, laid out by Harry Colt in 1894 on the shingle and dunes at Camber in East Sussex, is one of the most admired and most private links in England. It is famous above all for its par 3s - a set widely held to be the best of any course in the country - and for the demanding, wind-swept nature of a links that rewards flighted, controlled iron play above all else. It is the home of the President's Putter, the Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society's midwinter meeting.
Rye is a members' club in the truest sense, and visitor access is very limited - most who play do so as the guest of a member. That exclusivity, and the fact that it holds no professional events, keeps it out of the public eye, but among those who know links golf it is spoken of with real reverence.
