Weybridge, Surrey · Designed by Harry Colt (1913) · Est. 1913
St George's Hill is Harry Colt at his most dramatic — a hilly, tumbling heathland course laid out in 1913 through the pines and heather of an exclusive private estate near Weybridge, on the wooded slopes above the River Wey. Where the Ascot heaths are relatively gentle underfoot, St George's Hill rises and falls across genuine hillside, giving elevated tees, downhill drives and long views that set it apart.
There are 27 holes — the Red, Blue and Green nines — with the Red and Blue forming the classic championship 18 of around 6,500 yards, par 70. Colt used the contours brilliantly: heather-lined fairways sweep between mature pine and birch, and in late spring the rhododendrons are ablaze. The estate around it, laid out from 1911, was one of England's first private gated communities and remains among its most exclusive.
Visitors are welcome Monday to Thursday in limited numbers and by advance booking. Note that from August 2026 the Red nine is undergoing renovation, so the 18-hole visitor combination will be the Green and Blue during that period.
Holes worth knowing
- 18th (par-3) — a classic Colt one-shotter played across a heathery fall in the ground to a green set against the pines.
- 2The downhill drives — St George's Hill's real terrain gives elevated tee shots and long views that most heaths, laid out on the flat, simply cannot offer.
Highlights
- Dramatic hillside Harry Colt heathland (1913)
- 27 holes on one of England's most exclusive estates
- Elevated tees and downhill drives, rare inland
- Blazing rhododendrons in late spring
Good to know
- →This is Harry Colt using real hills — the elevation changes make it feel quite different from the flatter Ascot and Woking heaths.
- →Visitors play Monday to Thursday in limited numbers; book well ahead through the office, and check which 18 is in play (Red is under renovation from August 2026).
- →Late May into June brings the rhododendrons out in force — one of the prettiest times to play any heathland course.
- →The surrounding St George's Hill estate is one of England's oldest and most exclusive private communities — long a home to celebrities and, historically, to the Weybridge music-industry set.
- →It pairs naturally with Woking, West Hill and Worplesdon a short drive west for a full Surrey-heathland tour; Heathrow is only 25 minutes.
