The New Course at Sunningdale was designed by Harry Colt in 1923, a generation after Willie Park Jr's celebrated Old, and many good judges rate it every bit the Old's equal - sterner, more exposed and more heathery, if a shade less charming. Together the two make Sunningdale one of the greatest 36-hole clubs in the world, a byword for heathland golf through heather, pine and silver birch near Ascot.
Where the Old is the more famous and photographed, the New is the connoisseur's pick - a tougher, more searching examination that Colt built at the height of his powers. Visitor access is for weekdays and comes at a premium, but a day on both courses is one of the finest heathland experiences in the game.
