Rathcore Golf & Country Club

Enfield, Co. Meath · Designed by Mel Flanagan (2004)

In 804 AD the High King Áed Oirdnide assembled his army at Dún Cuair — the ancient name for this ground — before ravaging Leinster twice in a single month; in the same year a synod of the Uí Néill was presided over here by Connmach, Abbot of Armagh. The site stood on An tSlí Mhór (The Great Way), one of five roads radiating from the Hill of Tara and the principal east-west highway through medieval Ireland. Two of the ring forts built here in pre-Christian times survive on the 130-acre estate and are visible from several fairways. After Henry II granted the area to Sir Hugh de Lacy in 1172, a Norman motte was constructed in the adjacent townland of Jordanstown — its earthworks are still visible near the course boundary.

Mel Flanagan designed the 18-hole championship layout in 2004 across ground where High Kings once held councils. The natural springs on the property feed 12 of the 18 holes, giving Rathcore's lakes and ponds a soft, ecologically integrated quality rather than the engineered-resort feel of purpose-built water features. The par 3s are the course's signature: the 11th plays from an elevated hillock to a green jutting into a lake, protected by a giant sycamore; the 16th shares the same reed-laced pond from the opposite direction at 178 yards. Both reward stillness under pressure and punish mechanical swings.

The Boyne Valley within 30 minutes contains perhaps the greatest concentration of ancient sites in Ireland. Trim Castle (16 km, the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, used in Braveheart) is the most visited. The Hill of Tara (24 km), inauguration site of the High Kings, overlooks the entire valley. Tlachtga at the Hill of Ward (20 km near Athboy) is the ceremonial site where Samhain — the ancient festival that became Halloween — was celebrated annually.

Holes worth knowing

  • 111th (par-3) — played from an elevated hillock to a green jutting out into a lake, protected by a giant sycamore. Water is immediate and unforgiving on the right; missing left leaves a difficult recovery.
  • 216th (par-3, 178 yards) — shares the same reed-laced pond as the 11th but plays from the opposite direction at greater distance. The natural reed framing gives it a wildness that manufactured lake holes rarely achieve.

Highlights

  • Two pre-Christian ring forts on the estate, visible from several fairways
  • 12 of 18 holes feature spring-fed water — natural, not engineered
  • 11th and 16th par 3s share a reed-laced lake: outstanding short holes
  • Mel Flanagan design (2004) on ground where High King Áed Oirdnide assembled in 804 AD
  • Trim Castle (16 km), Hill of Tara (24 km), Hill of Ward/Tlachtga (20 km)

Good to know

  • Trim Castle (16 km) is worth the guided tour — the cruciform keep is the largest of its kind in Ireland, and the walk along the town walls above the Boyne is less visited and just as impressive. Admission €5.
  • The Hill of Tara (24 km) is free and takes about 45 minutes. The Lia Fáil (Stone of Destiny) stands near the summit; the panoramic view across the Boyne Valley on a clear day covers five counties.
  • StockHouse Restaurant in Trim (16 km, on Emmet Street close to the castle) is the best post-round dinner option within 30 km — 28-day aged Irish beef, farm-sourced, consistently the top-rated restaurant in the town.
