Estela Golf Club
Póvoa de Varzim, Porto · Designed by Duarte Sottomayor (1989) · Est. 1989
Estela is a rarity in Portugal: a genuine seaside links, laid out along the dunes of the Atlantic coast at Póvoa de Varzim, north of Porto. Built on a sandy base right against the beach, with marram, little vegetation and the sea wind sweeping across almost every hole, it plays far more like a Scottish or Irish links than a typical Iberian resort course — a proper, honest test that catches many visitors by surprise.
At par 72 over around 6,200 metres, it runs out and back along the shore, its firm, fast greens regularly rated among the truest in Portugal. The wind is the great defence: on a breezy day Estela is a searching examination of ball flight and nerve, and on a calm one it is a pure, uncomplicated pleasure. There are few trees and few tricks — just links golf as it should be.
Quiet, unpretentious and excellent value, Estela is the perfect complement to a trip based around Porto and the old Oporto club at Espinho.
Holes worth knowing
- 1The beachside holes — routed hard against the Atlantic dunes, exposed to the sea wind that is the course's main defence.
- 2The firm, fast greens — among the truest in Portugal, they reward a well-flighted approach and punish the loose one.
Highlights
- A genuine Atlantic links — rare in Portugal
- Sandy, wind-swept duneland at Póvoa de Varzim
- Greens rated among the truest in the country
- Honest, great-value links golf near Porto
Good to know
- →Estela is a true links — sandy, treeless and exposed — so flight the ball low into the wind and expect a very different test from the Algarve resorts.
- →The greens are famously fast and true; take time on the practice green before you go out.
- →It pairs naturally with the historic Oporto Golf Club at Espinho for a two-links northern trip either side of the city.
- →Póvoa de Varzim is a lively seaside town with a casino and good seafood restaurants along the front.
- →Porto — its port lodges, Ribeira and the Douro — is only 30 minutes south, so a golf-and-city break works perfectly here.
