Royal Óbidos Golf Course
Óbidos, Silver Coast · Designed by Severiano Ballesteros (2011) · Est. 2011
Royal Óbidos is one of the last courses designed by the great Severiano Ballesteros, opened in 2011 on rolling ground above the Atlantic near the medieval town of Óbidos on Portugal's Silver Coast. It carries Seve's stamp: bold, strategic and full of movement, with elevation changes, generous but well-defended fairways and greens that demand imagination and touch — the very qualities that defined his own golf.
At par 72 over around 6,400 metres, it makes fine use of the undulating terrain and offers sweeping views over the Óbidos lagoon and out to sea, with several holes rising and falling dramatically. It is the centrepiece of the Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort, and part of the fast-rising Silver Coast cluster that has made this stretch north of Lisbon one of Europe's most exciting new golf regions.
With the West Cliffs and Praia d'El Rey courses nearby, Royal Óbidos anchors a superb multi-round base within easy reach of Lisbon.
Holes worth knowing
- 1The elevated tees — Seve used the rolling terrain for dramatic downhill drives and long views over the Óbidos lagoon to the sea.
- 2The strategic short holes — full of the imagination and touch that defined Ballesteros's own game, asking for creativity around the greens.
Highlights
- One of Seve Ballesteros's last designs (2011)
- Bold, strategic golf with big elevation changes
- Sweeping Óbidos lagoon and Atlantic views
- Anchors the rising Silver Coast golf cluster
Good to know
- →This is a genuine Seve Ballesteros design — one of his last — so expect bold, strategic golf with plenty of movement and character.
- →It pairs perfectly with West Cliffs and Praia d'El Rey a few minutes away for a superb Silver Coast multi-round trip.
- →The walled medieval town of Óbidos is one of Portugal's prettiest — cobbled streets, a castle, and the cherry liqueur ginjinha served in a chocolate cup.
- →The resort has a spa hotel on site; Lisbon is under an hour, so the Silver Coast works as a day trip or a base in its own right.
- →The Atlantic beaches and the surf town of Peniche (and the Berlengas islands) are close for a non-golf day.
