Dundonald Links

Gailes, Ayrshire · Designed by Kyle Phillips (2003) · Est. 2003

Dundonald is the modern championship links of the Ayrshire coast. Kyle Phillips — the architect of Kingsbarns — reshaped an earlier course on the Gailes duneland and it reopened in 2003, owned by the exclusive Loch Lomond Golf Club. It quickly earned a big-event pedigree, hosting the Scottish Open in 2017 and the Women's Scottish Open, and a striking clubhouse and lodge opened in 2019 to make it a full stay-and-play destination.

The course plays firm and fast over classic linksland to around 7,100 yards and par 72, with the rumpled fairways, revetted bunkers and subtle greens you would expect from a Phillips design. Set between Western Gailes and Glasgow Prestwick, it slots naturally into an Ayrshire itinerary alongside Troon, Turnberry and Prestwick.

The ground has been golfing land since the late 19th century, but it was Phillips's 2003 remodelling, and the backing of the exclusive Loch Lomond Golf Club, that made it a championship venue; the clubhouse and lodges added in 2019 turned it into Ayrshire's premier stay-and-play address. Firm and fast with the wind rarely absent, it rewards the low, running shot and punishes the aerial game — exactly as a links should.
