Machynys — the name means "Monk's Island" — is a Jack Nicklaus championship course that opened in July 2005 as the centrepiece of the Llanelli Waterside regeneration, on a peninsula on the banks of the Loughor estuary with the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty across the water. Jack and Gary Nicklaus laid it out to about 7,121 yards, and it has since hosted a remarkable run of championships, including R&A events and Ladies European Tour golf.
It bills itself as a modern links, and while it is really a contemporary lakeland course rather than a true seaside links — 25 acres of lakes bring water into play on two-thirds of the holes — it enjoys real estuary views, sea air and firm coastal turf. The Nicklaus shaping is bold and strategic, rewarding position off the tee and punishing the careless.
With a premier spa and a modern clubhouse alongside, Machynys is a polished, resort-style contrast to the region's ancient links, and a natural pairing with Ashburnham just up the coast.
Holes worth knowing
- 1The estuary holes — the closing stretch plays along the Loughor with the Gower across the water; classic Nicklaus, framing sea and water hazard together.
- 2The lake holes — with water on two-thirds of the course, Machynys is target golf: pick your line, take enough club and favour the fat of the green.

Good to know
- →Machynys pairs a modern Nicklaus course with a premier spa — a polished change of pace from the region's ancient links, and handy alongside Ashburnham near Llanelli.
- →It is target golf with water on two-thirds of the holes; bring spare balls, pick your line carefully off the tee and take a buggy for the spread-out routing.
- →The peninsula was reclaimed as part of the Llanelli Waterside regeneration; "Machynys" means "Monk's Island," after an early Christian settlement here.
- →The Wetland Centre Wales and the Millennium Coastal Path run alongside — good for a walk, a bike ride or birdwatching across the Loughor estuary to the Gower.
- →Llanelli and the Gower are on the doorstep; pair Machynys with Ashburnham and Pennard for a modern-and-classic mix of West Wales golf.
