Newport Golf Club

Newport, Gwent · Designed by Founded 1903 · Est. 1903

Newport Golf Club, at Great Oak in Rogerstone on the western edge of the city, is widely regarded as one of the finest inland courses in South Wales. Founded in 1903, it is a mature, undulating parkland of real quality, its tree-lined fairways and excellent greens laid out over rolling ground with views toward the Bristol Channel and, on a clear day, the hills of Somerset beyond.

At par 72 over around 6,400 yards, it is a proper members' course — traditional, well-conditioned and a genuine test without ever being tricked-up. It has hosted the Welsh Amateur and other national events, and its reputation among Welsh golfers is high, yet green fees remain very reasonable for a course of this pedigree.

Handy for the M4 and only a few minutes from Celtic Manor, Newport is an excellent, well-priced addition to a South Wales golf itinerary. Laid out on the wooded slopes of Great Oak above the Usk valley, the course climbs and falls through mature oak and beech, with the par-3s especially well regarded. It has long been one of the strongest members’ clubs in Wales, producing county and international players, and its keen green fee makes it one of the best-value serious rounds in the south.

  • 1The elevated holes — from the higher ground the course opens up toward the Bristol Channel and the Somerset hills beyond.
