Why Cork and the southwest
Cork is where many Ireland golf trips end — or should begin. Fly into Cork Airport, drive twenty minutes to Kinsale, and you have Old Head of Kinsale on a clifftop peninsula above the Atlantic, one of the most dramatic settings in world golf. Thirty minutes east of the city is Fota Island, which has hosted the Irish Open and remains one of the finest parkland courses in the country. Between them, they offer a combination of links drama and parkland quality that is hard to match anywhere in Europe.
The region is consistently underrated as a golfing base. Kinsale — a small coastal town with an outsized reputation for food and drink — is well positioned for both the golf and the wider southwest. Golfers who fly into Shannon and head west often miss Cork entirely. It's a mistake worth avoiding.
The golf
Old Head of Kinsale
Old Head Golf Links is unlike any other course in Ireland. It sits on a narrow peninsula south of Kinsale, high above the Atlantic on three sides, and plays along the clifftop for much of its length. Several holes hang directly over the sea. There is nowhere else in Ireland — and very few places in the world — where the drama of the setting matches the quality of the golf.
It is also the most expensive course in Ireland. Green fees reflect the exclusivity of the experience. If you play one splurge course on your Ireland trip, this is the one. Book direct with the club, well in advance — morning tee times in summer are gone months ahead.
Fota Island
Fota Island Resort on Great Island in Cork Harbour is Ireland's preeminent parkland resort. The Duhallow course is the championship layout: a mature, tree-lined parkland that hosted the Irish Open in 2001, 2002, and 2014. The resort has three courses, on-site accommodation, and the kind of organisation that makes a golf trip straightforward. Book direct with the resort.
Cork city and surrounds
Cork Golf Club in Little Island is one of Ireland's oldest and most respected clubs — founded in 1888, with a course designed by Alister MacKenzie, who also designed Augusta National. It is a private members' club but accepts visitors on weekdays. Worth seeking out if you can arrange it.
Kinsale Golf Club operates two courses on the hills above the town. Neither is a top-tier course but both offer good value and attractive views over Kinsale Harbour — a sensible second or third round alongside Old Head. Blarney Golf Resort northwest of Cork city is the county's most accessible parkland option — a well-maintained resort course convenient for golfers flying in or out of Cork Airport. Bandon Golf Club and Mallow Golf Club inland are reliable options for golfers combining Cork with a longer southwest circuit.
Where to base yourself
Kinsale for golfers focused on Old Head — it is the most pleasant town in the Cork area, small enough to walk end to end, with better restaurants than the city. Cork city for flexibility — easy access to Fota Island, Old Head, and the wider county, with direct flights from most UK and European airports. Fota Island Resort if you want everything on site and don't need to be in a town.
Where to stay
Kinsale
Perryville House on the harbour front is the best place to stay in Kinsale — a beautifully restored Georgian townhouse with eleven rooms, excellent breakfast, and views over the water. The Trident Hotel is the larger, reliable option on the waterfront — well run and popular with golfers visiting Old Head.
Fota Island
Fota Island Resort is the obvious on-site choice — rooms, spa, and golf all in one place. The quality is consistent and the location is unbeatable for golfers playing the resort courses.
Cork city
Hayfield Manor on the western edge of the city is Cork's finest hotel — a five-star manor house with gardens, close to University College Cork. The Imperial Hotel on South Mall is the central city option — historic, comfortable, and well positioned for everything the city offers.
Where to eat and drink
Kinsale
Kinsale has a claim to be Ireland's best food town outside Dublin. Fishy Fishy on Crowley's Quay is the best seafood restaurant in the southwest — casual, excellent, and consistently busy. Book ahead. Finn's Table on Main Street is the place for a proper dinner — a small room focused on local produce. The Black Pig wine bar is the best place for a drink after dinner.
Cork city
The English Market in the city centre is one of the finest covered food markets in Europe — go for lunch, buy cheese and fresh fish. Nash 19 adjacent to it is the best daytime café in the city. Greenes Restaurant is worth booking for dinner. For a pint, The Mutton Lane Inn off Patrick Street is a gem — tiny, dark, and properly Cork.
Beyond the golf
Kinsale town itself is worth a half day — a walled harbour settlement with a well-preserved star fort (Charles Fort), good walking on the headland, and more good restaurants per square mile than almost anywhere in Ireland.
Blarney Castle ten minutes north of Cork city is genuinely worth a visit — the castle grounds are beautiful and the stone is better managed than its reputation suggests. Go early to avoid queues.
The Beara Peninsula southwest of Cork — a quieter cousin of the Kerry Ring — offers some of the most dramatic coastal driving in Ireland with almost none of the tourist traffic. The drive from Castletownbere around the Healy Pass to Kenmare is one of the great Irish road journeys. Allow a full day.
Common questions
What is Old Head of Kinsale like as a golf course?
Old Head is a dramatic clifftop course on a peninsula 100 metres above the Atlantic — visually unlike anything else in Irish golf. Green fees are high; it is a luxury experience rather than a locals' course. Worth doing once if you are in Cork.
What are the best golf courses near Cork city?
Fota Island Resort has three courses and is the most accessible quality golf near the city. Old Head of Kinsale is 50km south. Lee Valley Golf Club is a solid option for a more relaxed round at moderate prices.
How far is Old Head of Kinsale from Cork city?
About 50 kilometres — roughly an hour by car through Kinsale. The drive is good and Kinsale itself is excellent for lunch.
Can I combine a Cork and Kerry golf trip?
Easily — Cork city to Killarney is about 90 minutes. Most golfers who visit Cork combine the two counties. Base in Kinsale or Cork city for the first two nights, then move to Killarney or Kenmare.
Is there good parkland golf in Cork?
Yes. Fota Island's Deerpark course is the main championship layout — it regularly hosts European Tour events. The course is well-maintained and significantly more accessible than Old Head.
