Golf weekends in Scotland

Scotland · Short breaks

The home of golf, in two days

You do not need a week in Scotland to play the courses the game was invented on. The best of them come in tight clusters — three or four world-class links inside twenty minutes of each other — so a weekend from Edinburgh or Glasgow is a genuine golf trip, not a compromise. The country almost designed itself for the two-day break: pick a coast, base in one town, and play a different piece of history each day.

Which coast to choose

East Lothian — “Scotland's Golf Coast” — is the most efficient of the three: Muirfield, North Berwick, Gullane and Dunbar all within a few miles, forty minutes from Edinburgh Airport. If you want maximum links for minimum driving, start here.

Fife & St Andrews is the pilgrimage — base in St Andrews, get on the Old Course and Kingsbarns, and fill the rest with the ancient East Neuk links. It is the one every golfer means to do once.

Ayrshire is the west-coast championship belt — Royal Troon, Turnberry and Prestwick, with Prestwick Airport in the middle of them and the great-value Gailes links alongside. It is the easiest to reach if you are flying in, and the best for pairing a marquee round with an affordable one. To keep any weekend cheaper, see our affordable golf guide.

How to make it work

Book the headline course first: the Old Course runs a daily ballot and takes advance reservations months out, and Muirfield and Turnberry go early and limit visitor days, so lock those in before you plan anything else, then build the cheaper, easier rounds around them. Note the Old Course is closed on Sundays, so weekends here really mean a Saturday marquee round. Play the shoulder months for lower fees and lighter crowds, check what it costs, and let the trip planner pull it together once you have a region. Book a bed early — St Andrews and North Berwick fill fast in season.
