Portsalon Golf Club
Portsalon, Co. Donegal · Designed by Founded 1891; revised by Pat Ruddy · Est. 1891
Why this Edge Score: Portsalon runs along the golden sand of Ballymastocker Bay on Donegal's Fanad peninsula, one of the most beautiful settings in Irish golf. A historic links sharpened by Pat Ruddy, it stays gloriously uncrowded and offers outstanding value.
Portsalon lies on the shore of Ballymastocker Bay on Donegal's Fanad peninsula, its holes running along one of the most beautiful beaches in the world - a stretch of golden sand once voted the second best on earth by a British newspaper's readers. Founded in 1891, it is one of Ireland's older links, and a Pat Ruddy revision around the turn of the millennium tightened and lengthened it into a proper modern test while keeping its natural charm.
For decades Portsalon was a hidden treasure known mainly to those who made the long drive to Fanad; it remains gloriously uncrowded and outstanding value. The setting - beach on one side, the Knockalla mountains on the other - is as good as links golf gets, and the golf more than lives up to it.
