Monte Rei Golf & Country Club — North Course

Vila Nova de Cacela, Algarve · Designed by Jack Nicklaus Signature (2007) · Est. 2007

Monte Rei is regularly ranked the finest golf course in Portugal, and playing it feels every bit the part. Set in the quiet hills of the eastern Algarve near Vila Nova de Cacela, not far from the Spanish border, its North Course is a Jack Nicklaus Signature design — the first Nicklaus Signature course in Portugal — laid across a private 1,000-acre estate that rolls between the Serra do Caldeirão mountains and, in the distance, the Atlantic.

Opened in 2007, the par-72 layout stretches to around 7,180 yards and winds through unspoilt cork-oak countryside, with five lakes bringing water into play and Nicklaus's trademark strategic bunkering framing generous, immaculate fairways. But what sets Monte Rei apart as much as the design is the presentation and the service. The conditioning is consistently rated among the very best in Europe, and the club runs deliberately low-volume — wide spacing between groups, a buggy for every round, and a roving on-course service that brings drinks and snacks to your cart, with a celebrated light lunch included in the green fee. It is golf run as pure hospitality.

A second Nicklaus Signature course, the long-planned South, is set to join it and make Monte Rei one of the rare resorts anywhere with two Nicklaus Signature layouts. For now the North stands alone as Portugal's benchmark — an expensive, special-occasion round rather than an everyday one, but for polish and sheer sense of occasion, nothing in the country comes close.

Holes worth knowing

  • 1The water holes of the back nine — Nicklaus threads several holes around lakes on the run home, where the strategic lines and the pristine conditioning are seen at their best.
  • 2The par-5s — five of them, each a genuine risk-and-reward decision, giving longer players a chance and everyone something to think about.

Highlights

  • Regularly ranked No. 1 in Portugal
  • Jack Nicklaus Signature design (2007)
  • Conditioning among the best in Europe
  • Low-volume, buggy and tapas lunch included

Good to know

  • Play is deliberately limited and the club is exclusive — book well ahead and expect generous spacing, unhurried golf and a caddie or forecaddie option.
  • A buggy is included with every round, as is the celebrated tapas lunch at the halfway house for those not staying on the estate — worth timing your round around.
  • It is a special-occasion round rather than an everyday one: take your time, enjoy the immaculate conditioning, and drink in the mountain-and-sea views.
  • The quieter eastern Algarve is the real appeal — the riverside town of Tavira, the tidal hamlet of Cacela Velha and the Ria Formosa lagoons make a lovely, low-key base.
  • Faro airport is under an hour; Seville and its old town are a scenic 90-minute drive east across the Spanish border, an easy day trip or alternative arrival point.
