Gullane, East Lothian · Designed by Willie Park Sr; club founded 1882 · Est. 1898
Gullane No. 2 is the middle sibling of the three superb links that climb Gullane Hill in the heart of East Lothian's "golf coast," and a wonderful course in its own right — long overshadowed by its famous stablemate No. 1 (an Open Final Qualifying and Scottish Open venue), but quieter, keenly priced and, some argue, nearly as good.
At par 71 over around 6,400 yards, it shares the same magnificent springy links turf and the same glorious position, climbing the hill for panoramic views over the Firth of Forth, Muirfield and the Lammermuir hills before tumbling back toward the village. The wind off the Forth is the great defence, and the firm, running ground rewards the classic links game of flight and imagination.
With three Gullane courses, neighbouring Muirfield, North Berwick and Craigielaw all within a few miles, No. 2 is a key part of the finest concentration of links golf anywhere outside St Andrews.
Holes worth knowing
- 1The hilltop holes — climbing Gullane Hill, the course opens up to panoramic views over the Forth, Muirfield and the Lammermuirs.
- 2The tumbling links turf — the same springy, fast-running ground that makes Gullane one of the great links addresses, at a fraction of No. 1's fee.
Highlights
- One of three superb links on Gullane Hill
- Panoramic Firth of Forth views
- Magnificent springy links turf
- Quieter and keener-priced than Gullane No. 1
Good to know
- →Gullane has three links courses on the hill — No. 1 is the star, but No. 2 shares the same turf and views for a keener fee and smaller crowds.
- →The wind off the Forth is the defence — play the low, running links game and use the slopes.
- →It sits amid the greatest cluster of links outside St Andrews: Muirfield, North Berwick, Craigielaw and Luffness are all minutes away.
- →The village of Gullane has good pubs and the Michelin-starred Chez Roux at Greywalls by Muirfield for a special dinner.
- →Edinburgh is 40 minutes, so the whole East Lothian coast works as day trips from the city or a dedicated links base.
