Wrexham Golf Club

Wrexham · Designed by James Braid · Est. 1924

Wrexham Golf Club, in the north-east corner of Wales just a few miles from the English border, is a fine James Braid design and one of the better inland courses in the north of the country. Laid out over gently undulating, sandy-based ground, it has a slightly heathland feel, with the fast-draining turf and clever bunkering that are the hallmarks of Braid's work.

At par 70 over around 6,200 yards, it is a fair but testing parkland with mature trees, well-guarded greens and the strategic subtlety a Braid layout always brings. It is friendly, well-kept and — like so much North Wales golf away from the coast — remarkably good value, with a modernised clubhouse and a warm welcome for visitors.

Handy for the border, Chester and the Dee Valley, Wrexham makes an easy, well-priced round for anyone touring the north-east of Wales or crossing between England and the Welsh coast.

Holes worth knowing

  • 1The sandy, well-drained holes — Braid used the free-draining ground to give Wrexham a firm, quasi-heathland character rare inland in Wales.
  • 2The strategic bunkering — a Braid hallmark, the well-placed traps ask real questions off the tee and on approach.

Highlights

  • A James Braid design
  • Sandy-based parkland with a heathland feel
  • Well-drained and testing, Braid's trademark bunkering
  • Friendly, modernised club — great value

Good to know

  • Wrexham is a James Braid design on sandy ground — firmer and more heathland-like than most inland Welsh courses, and superb value.
  • It is only a few miles from the English border, so it is easy to reach from Chester, Liverpool or the Wirral.
  • Wrexham itself has become well known through its football club and its Hollywood owners — a lively town for a stopover.
  • The Dee Valley, Llangollen and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (a World Heritage site) are a short drive for a rest day.
  • It pairs well with Vale of Llangollen nearby for an inland north-east Wales day before heading to the coast.
