What a Portugal golf trip costs

Portugal · Planning

The honest picture

Portugal is Europe's value-for-money golf capital — a week of warm winter-sun golf on well-groomed resort courses costs far less than a summer trip north, and the mild climate means you are buying golf when nowhere else in Europe can offer it. The one thing that swings the budget is the season: prime winter and spring command the highest rates, midsummer the lowest.

Everything below is a realistic guide to 2020s prices in euros — ballpark ranges, since resorts flex rates by season and stay-and-play packages (more on those below) can beat the rack green fee substantially. Buggies are often included or effectively required in the heat.

Green fees — by tier

The premium rounds (€180–390): Monte Rei tops the list — around €270–390 with buggy and its famous lunch included — followed by Oitavos Dunes and the marquee Algarve names.

The resort classics (€140–260):Quinta do Lago (South, North, Laranjal), Vale do Lobo, San Lorenzo, Penha Longa and the Silver Coast courses (West Cliffs, Praia d'El Rey, Royal Óbidos) mostly sit here.

Great value (€80–150): the Vilamoura courses (Old, Pinhal, Millennium), Palmares and Amendoeira are keenly priced for the quality.

Bargains (€50–110): Salgados, and the historic northern links at Oporto and Estela, deliver genuine quality for the price of a casual dinner.

Stay-and-play packages

Portugal is the one country where a package can genuinely beat booking direct. The big resorts — Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura, Monte Rei, the Silver Coast — bundle hotel nights with rounds on their own and partner courses at rates below the walk-up green fee, often with buggies and transfers thrown in. For a single-base Algarve week it is well worth comparing a resort package against booking each element yourself.

Where to stay, and what it costs

Accommodation is a big part of Portugal's value. Apartments and mid-range hotels in the central Algarve run roughly €70–160 a night; the four- and five-star golf resorts €160–350; and the very top suites at Monte Rei, Conrad or Pine Cliffs higher still. Self-catering apartments or villas shared between a group are excellent value and abundant around Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago.

Getting there, and getting around

Most golfers fly into Faro for the Algarve or Lisbon for the Silver Coast; both are well served by budget airlines, so flights are often the cheapest element of the trip. A hire car is worth having — roughly €120–250 for a week, split between a group — though the central Algarve courses are so close together you barely need it. Portugal drives on the right, and the A22 coastal motorway uses electronic tolls, usually handled by a transponder in the hire car.

Food and drink

Eating out is a pleasure and a bargain: a good local restaurant runs €15–30 a head with wine, and fresh grilled fish and seafood are superb everywhere on the coast. Almancil and Vilamoura hold the Algarve's smartest tables if you want to splash out, but you can eat wonderfully for very little.

How to keep costs down

Travel the shoulders, not peak spring. Late autumn and December offer prime conditions below the February–April peak; high summer is cheapest of all if you can handle the heat. See when to go.

Compare a stay-and-play package. For a single-base Algarve week, a resort bundle often beats booking each round and night separately.

Mix one showpiece with value. Anchor the week with Monte Rei or Oitavos and fill the rest with the excellent-value Vilamoura and northern courses. See the best courses guide, and build your real number in our free planner.
